In a game played at Roma on Monday night, May 2 to determine the fourth and final District 31-5A baseball playoff berth, the Roma Gladiators scored the contest’s only run with two out in the bottom of the seventh to achieve a 1-0 triumph over the Rio Grande City Rattlers.
The game was made necessary when Rio won its final regular season game and Roma lost its finale, causing the teams to finish tied for fourth place. The two teams had split the two regular season battles.
The game, an intense pitching duel between Rattler lefthander Ruben Sepulveda and Gladiator righthander Alex Mascorro, was tightly contested throughout as both teams threatened several times. The Gladiators finally broke through after they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
Despite the tough loss in the intense game, the Rattlers showed clear improvement in the 2016 season and Rattler fans should be confident that 2017 will be a solid and even outstanding season.
