Rio Grande City Sales Tax Allocation Reaches “Milestone”



On Wednesday, February 12, the City of Rio Grande City received its highest single-month Sales Tax Allocation from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts totaling $400,199.15, which makes the payoff the first of its kind to exceeded four hundred thousand dollars. The allocation was based upon December 2013 Sales Tax collections, where Rio Grande City receipts grew by 3.53% compared to the previous year.

“This is a major milestone for our City,” said Mayor Ruben O. Villarreal. “[This] is also proof that the economy in Rio Grande City is strong. Rio Grande City’s Year-To-Date Sales Tax collections are up 6.21% year-over-year, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, and positive economic developments in, and around Rio Grande City indicate this trend will continue.”

“These monies are the funds which allow the city to operate on a daily basis.” added Mayor Villarreal, Department budgets [such as] Fire Dept, police dept, public works and so on are configured around this funding.”
