On Thursday afternoon, March 21, at Rio Grande City High School, Rattler football players Andrew Pratt, and Jesus Lucero officially decided where they will be playing college football next season. At a signing ceremony, both athletes decided they will be attending Southwestern University in Georgetown after graduating from high School.
“It’s a great feeling”, said Lucero, “knowing that you’re gonna go to college, and get an education first, and play football it’s the greatest feeling out there”. “I’ve achieved my goal” said Pratt, “my dream was always to play college football, this is my next step”.
According to a press release about the signing, Pratt and Lucero are the first Rattler football players since Abel Gonzalez in 1998 to go-on to play football at the college level.
Back in 2011, Southwestern University announced its plans to reinstate its football program, fielding a football team for the first time in almost 60 years. The newly formed team is scheduled to play its first game in the fall of 2013. Southwestern is officially a Division III school and competes in the SCAC conference.
